Aston villa sacks Remi Garde

The Frenchman has failed to reverse Villa's fortunes since replacing Tim Sherwood in November and has now been axed

Remi Garde has quit bottom club Aston Villa after finally agreeing a pay-off.

Manager Garde had continued to take training during this international break but has been negotiating an exit package as there were three years left on his contract.

A breakthrough was made on Tuesday to agree a severance deal and the club have confirmed his parting by “mutual consent”.

Relegation-bound, rock-bottom Villa have put coach Eric Black in charge ahead of Chelsea’s visit for the Saturday lunchtime game.

Villa were willing to wait until the summer to replace Garde with the club doomed to relegation after only two league wins under him.

But Garde, 49, hastened his departure following six straight defeats by complaining his position had become untenable after the club failed to back him in January.

A statement said: “Manager, Remi Garde, has today left Aston Villa Football Club by mutual consent.

“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to RĂ©mi for all his efforts during a difficult period and wish him well in the future.

“Eric Black will take over as acting manager until the club appoints a new manager.”

When Garde succeeded Tim Sherwood in November as boss, he was promised money to spend in January by owner Randy Lerner.

But he missed out on a number of targets including Loic Remy, Seydou Doumbia, Mathieu Debuchy, Wahbi Khazri and goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic.

Garde is expected to link up again this summer with Lyon, who are fourth in Ligue 1 and have his former assistant Bruno Genesio in charge.
Villa’s new-look board, who hired ex-FA executive Adrian Bevington earlier on Tuesday, have drawn up a short-list of British bosses to get them out of the Championship.

These include Hull manager Steve Bruce, who still lives in the Midlands, long-standing target David Moyes, ex-Leicester chief Nigel Pearson and Burnley’s Sean Dyche.

Garde’s exit is unlikely to be the only remaining change, with head of recruitment Paddy Riley expected to follow CEO Tom Fox and sporting director Hendrik Almstadt out of the club.
Villa’s season has been dogged by controversy and various bust-ups.

Their captain, defender Micah Richards, called a Villa fan “a clown” on Tuesday for tagging him in a picture on social media with team-mate Gabriel Agbonlahor in Dubai over Easter.
Richards responded: “Don’t tag me in your stupid photos u clown! Excuse us for having a few days away after a long hard season.”
