Seventeen Angolan activists have been sentenced to between two and eight
years in jail for planning a rebellion against President Jose Eduardo
dos Santos. One of them is the well-known rapper
Luaty Beirao -- also
known as Ikonoklasta -- who went on a month-long hunger strike last
year. The young men were arrested after they discussed a book about
non-violent resistance. Their youth group also held demonstrations
demanding the resignation of Mr dos Santos who has been in power in
Angola for thirty-six years.
