The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says it has started the pilot smart meters installation in Niger State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the scheme commenced on Tuesday at the Tungan area of Minna, the state capital.
At the ceremony, Mr Ernest Mupwaya, AEDC Acting Managing Director, said that a total of 1, 000 meters would be installed in Minna.
“At this initial stage, 1,000 meters will be installed for free for our customers in the Minna area. The new and smart meters.
“The meters allow the customers and the company to monitor adequate use and amount of electricity allocated to each meter through a device attached to it and also our control room.
“Another thing is that with the installation; a proper way is in-built to reduce methods of consumption. We now have the opportunity to reduce load on transformers.
“All consumers will be placed on different light points of either green or blue line and thereby eliminate a situation where all customers will jam one particular phase and overload transformers.”
Mupwaya added that the company would assess all challenges involved in this pilot scheme to evolve a more robust way of deploying the new meters to its catchment states of Abuja, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa
A customer, Alhaji Musa Ibrahim, told NAN that the new smart meter would allow a customer to determine electricity use.
He said that the new meter would also reduce the incidence of fire outbreaks in residences.
“I have been a regular visitor to AEDC office in Tunga with one complaint or the other. It’s usually not being able to load or no light after loading.
“With the explanations given, this new meter will allow me to quickly monitor my balance in the comfort of my bedroom and recharge,” he said.
